Alejandra Musalem

Mariana Bassani

The painting “Matters of Power” seeks to illustrate the eternal conflict with those who faunt power, symbolized by the “apparent beast”. The girl accompanied by the free flight of birds, envelops the scene by dancing through the tension, choosing to confront the destructive situation with the greatness of a higher consciousness: “I choose to lower the lethal weapon, I choose peace.”

Alejandra was born in Santiago, Chile in 1966. She studied dentistry at the University of Chile and practiced until 2018. At the same time, she developed figurative painting as an autodidact and has devoted herself entirely to it since that year. For her, painting is a tool for self-knowledge and generates an introspective process, facilitated by studying a diploma in Jungian psychology, which allows working with the unconscious revealed through symbols. Images emerge in which the atmosphere contains the tension necessary to examine the complex human condition. The protagonist is also the person who interprets various archetypal psychological models. The image work uses universal elements to strengthen the viewer’s own ability.

“Though the noble oil and the brush on the canvas I open the route of color and form, I raise barriers, I cross thresholds .The language of symbols, sometimes cryptic others transparent is the compass that points the way to the deep secret of the psyche that tries to reveal the self, the union of the opposites, a dream of totality.”
