“For centuries, the words of the Persian poet Rumi have echoed: I am weary of beast and demon, and a human is my desire. But in a world where humanity has become synonymous with destruction and blood, I find myself subverting this cry. My response to the modern condition is: A demon and beast is my desire. In my work, the Div (the mythical Persian demon) is not a symbol of evil, but a sanctuary. When humans act with more cruelty than the monsters of legend, I prefer the skin of a demon, the only vessel left to hold what is truly sacred.
My vision of peace is an embrace. In the heart of conflict, lovers are the first to be torn apart. To me, a miracle is not a political treaty, but the defiant act of holding onto one another. This painting depicts two Divs locked in a profound embrace; it is a reminder to cherish every fleeting moment of affection. If these monsters can show such tenderness, we must ask ourselves what we have lost as humans. This is my peace: A raw, mythic stillness that needs no doves or olive branches, only the weight of another soul against your own.”
For over two decades, Sahar Haghgoo has been captivated by the power of storytelling, using her illustrations to bring tales to life. Her journey began in her native Iran, where Sahar had the honor of working on over 100 children’s books.
