Bassant Mosaad

You-Jin Chang

This painting explores a quiet, intimate moment of rest within the fast rhythm of everyday life. Set in a public space, it captures a daughter resting her head on her mother’s shoulder — a simple gesture that carries a deep sense of reassurance, as if the mother’s shoulder transforms into a vast space of safety and calm, allowing sleep to exist even amid the surrounding noise.

In contrast, the mother gazes into emptiness in silence, while tension and anxiety are reflected in her withdrawn expression and subtle hand movement. This contrast between the daughter’s visible comfort and the mother’s inner unrest reflects the central tension of the work. Here, peace is not presented as an ideal or permanent state, but as something fragile and temporary — emerging through small gestures of care, brief moments of stillness, and the silent presence of the other — before dissolving under the pressure of reality and the speed of daily life.

Within this noise, urgency, and fear of the unknown, the scene becomes a fleeting refuge — an in-between space suspended between anxiety and comfort — inviting reflection on the fragility of human safety and on how peace can exist in its simplest and most deeply human forms.

Bassant Mosaad (b. 2002) is an Egyptian, Cairo-based visual artist and an oil painting student at the Faculty of Fine Arts at Capital University. Her practice centers on capturing emotional and sensory experiences through a subtle, realistic approach. Inspired by everyday life, she creates intimate works that reflect quiet, often overlooked moments and shared human emotions. Through her focus on atmosphere, light, and emotional presence rather than direct narrative, her paintings invite viewers from different backgrounds to connect with a universal sense of familiarity and introspection. Her work aims to transcend cultural boundaries, offering a space where personal and collective experiences gently intersect.
