Eteri Chkadua

“Although I am not religious, with this painting of Saint Nino (spirit) I want to remind people why faith traditions were founded by the wise thinkers of their time. Throughout history, saints and religious leaders have repeatedly preached peace and the commandment of loving one’s neighbor. This principle is a cornerstone of many faiths: it calls for compassion, empathy, and the difficult duty to love others — even strangers and enemies. If holiness is thus expressed in the fundamental human ability to heal relationships, seek justice, and avoid violence, then that corresponds to my understanding of peace.”

Eteri Chkadua, born in Georgia, lives and works in Tbilisi and New York. With great spirit and independence, she blends the traditional with the contemporary, the Georgian with the global and represents a younger generation of artists who navigate with style and a sturdy optimism the complications and expanded fields of our brave, sometimes terrifying, new world.
