Hermann Sebastian Schultz

Hermann Sebastian Schultz is a figurative painter from Finland and is currently studying at the Helsinki Academy of Fine Arts Masters program. He has a background in mural painting. He primarily deals with themes such as social conflict and peace. What does peace look like? What is peace, and what components does peace consist of?
The theme for the painting “Peace” stems from a study at TAPRI (Tampere Peace Research Institute), a faculty of the University of Tampere. The study is called “Image and Peace.” In this study, five different artists, working with different media and disciplines, were commissioned to create a work that visualizes peace using their medium. The painting “Peace” is a product of this commission.
The painting is based on a theory of social conflict by Lewis Coser. According to this theory, social conflict is one of the most important components of peace and peacebuilding. Social conflict is, among other things, an essential part of individual character formation, a core function for group formation, interactions between individuals or groups of people, and the most important instrument for the distribution of power, rights, and resources. Without social conflict, there is no possibility of social justice, and it at least makes coexistence with unforgiving people possible.
