Jo Gyuhun

“If a miracle were to happen tonight and I woke up in a world at peace tomorrow, it would be a world filled only with love, free from hatred, conflict, and discrimination. To me, a peaceful world is a place where everyone can share their own love and understanding—just like the girl in my artwork Do You Want. I believe that true peace begins with these small, sincere gestures of reaching out and offering our hearts to one another.”

Jo Gyuhun is a contemporary artist based in South Korea. He primarily paints children who cover their faces. For him, covering one’s face is not about hiding; rather, it is another way of expressing emotion. Even without visible facial expressions, the colors, gestures, and small objects within the frame speak for the character’s heart. By appearing alongside popular icons or within everyday scenes, these characters create a space in which viewers can reflect on their own emotions.
