Balance is the first superficial association with the word “peace”. Yet, upon deeper reflection, balance is merely a fleeting moment of stillness before a sudden inclination towards one of the polarities. We are perpetually in motion, and this balance is practically unattainable. Frankly, I wouldn’t want to exist in a state of constant rest; in stagnation, nothing occurs — it’s boring and dulling. True growth and enrichment of life emerge in moments of overcoming crises, those very polarities between which a second of silence lingers. For me, this reflects a deeper understanding of the word “peace” — embracing life in all its diversity, a series of crises, conflicts, and moments of relaxation, pain, and poignant bursts of happiness with the ability to recognize that any crisis is temporary and to maintain this piece of peace at any moment in your life allowing space for humanity, warmth, closeness, and the strength and courage to navigate difficult times together. It turns out that peace is not a utopian vision of prosperity; it is challenging to depict. Yet, if I were to attempt it, I would envision a contemplative hero, his thoughts directed inward, toward the rich fabric of his life experience and inner strength.

I created this work specifically for the createPeace initiative but it reimagines my previous piece on paper, drawn in 2022, after the war between Russia and Ukraine began — a time when my family faced crisis, emigration, a sense of isolation from home, and hope for peace and a swift resolution. The dove — this most literal metaphor for peace — was right there in the idea. Unfortunately, after nearly four years, no miracle has occurred. We still hope and wait. Thus, the painting remains relevant to me. It continues to speak of faith, dreams of home, a calm and peaceful life, a space where everyone can coexist comfortably and sensibly.
